About this blog

My name is Joan and I’m a working mother, aspiring baker, longtime blogger and hopeless existentialist. I started this blog as a resolution for 2012. I consider it a “gratitude project” of sorts, and I hope it will keep me mindful of the moments in my life — small and large, profound and pedestrian, life-changing or often life-sucking — that make me wonderfully human. I’m surrounded by blessings, as are all of us, whether I choose to observe them or not. I invite you to join me on a journey in 2012, a journey on which I contemplate and repay my debt of gratitude for the beauty, grace, joy and love of this earthly life and its wondrously diverse (and maddening) fellow travelers.

What is a debt of gratitude?

For more than two decades, I’ve built a career in philanthropy. Some people call me a fundraiser, but that seems like an inadequate label for a job that is built around human relationships. “Debt of gratitude” is a phrase I use often in my professional life to describe the obligation my organization has to its donors for recognition and thanksgiving. Recently, I turned the concept inward and began to contemplate the debt of gratitude I owe to the universe — for the abundant blessings I receive every single day.

  1. Hi, Joah!

We’ve nominated your blog for the “Seven Things About Me Award”–just because we think you’re awesome. To accept the award, you should do three things:
    1. Link back to the nominator (that would be us).
    2. Post seven things about yourself–this can be as wacky or original as you like.
    3. Nominate seven blogs you like, and let them know you’ve done so.

There’s a badge involved, which you can lift from our site.

Of course, you can also choose to simply bask in our admiration, and that’s totally cool. Either way, we think you’re something special!
