Beyond the adjectives.

Dear friends,

It is the evening of Thanksgiving as I write this. I’m sitting in a comfortable chair by the window, which is slightly cracked so I can hear the rain. Kate is asleep, gripped by a long nap that won’t seem to release her. Her roommate, Houda, is sitting beside her in bed, glued to her laptop where she’s spent most of the afternoon typing furiously. Parker is stretched over the loveseat in the kitchen, eating cheese and crackers. Two of our visitors, Lusy and Barb, are at the kitchen island drinking hot tea and eating creme brulee. Doug and another visitor, Kristina, are in the den, talking tennis.

Life is perfect.

A year ago as I fretted over my oldest child leaving for college, I never could have dreamed our Thanksgiving holiday would bring us a houseful of international guests and so much joy in seeing my sweet CupKate cross our threshold again. I didn’t know then that different, as in my life is going to be so different when Kate leaves, often means lovely if you can scrounge up just an ounce of patience.

I kept my camera close by most of the day to catch the memories. I snapped this shot of Kate’s roommate:

After our meal we all crowded into the den, where the Tryptophan worked its magic and I fell asleep on the floor and missed half the video the girls had chosen.

Later, Mr. Mom and I rallied just long enough to do the dishes before collapsing in the den again for more television, more food, more laughter, more everything wonderful.

Speaking of wonderful, that’s the word the girls keep using to describe my cooking. The turkey, the leek bread pudding, the ginger cake with cinnamon whip, the creme brulee, the spiced cranberries, the brown sugar and ginger mini cheesecakes — it was all wonderful today. I joked I would have to teach them more English adjectives and they joked I would have to teach them to cook.

Perhaps, but tomorrow I’m teaching them the art and science of Black Friday shopping. We’re headed to St. Louis for treasures unknown.

Those of the known variety, however, are right here with me during this precious moment in time.

  1. I think I just gained another pound looking at your photos. Did I spy creamed corn as well? Oh me oh my. What I wouldn’t give for a run at your leftovers. Enjoy your company and the knowledge that in less than a month, your CupKate will be back home for an even longer stay. Such fun will be had – I can’t wait to read about it.   2. Good eye, Deb! The creamed corn is Kate’s favorite, so that and the green bean casserole (which I despise) were for her. The leek bread pudding and sausage and wild rice stuffing were for me. The creme brulee is all gone, but we’ve got plenty of pumpkin cake and mini cheesecakes left. Hopefully we can finish it all off after shopping. Mr. Mom already has his turkey soup simmering on the stove and it smells wonderful. And, oh yeah, I made Pioneer Woman’s cinnamon baked french toast this morning for breakfast. The girls loved it.

    • I don’t despise green bean casserole (not even a little bit) but the only reason I still make it is for my oldest who demands it be part of any Thanksgiving dinner. My youngest feels the same about brandied yams so those stay on the menu as well. Perhaps the only items we all equally agree on including are those of our favorite food group – PIE!

      That said – maybe you could email me your creamed corn recipe if you’ve got a winner? I know my Hub would love it and I’d be happy to offer up a dish “just for” him.

  5. Love those vintage plates almost more than the feast upon them. I’ve been pruning shrubs today instead of shopping. I think my “shrubbery enclave” is tucked in for the winter. Thank you for your lovelyThanksgiving posts.

  6. M’del, thank you for noticing my plates! I bought a service for 8 in a thrift store in Dewey, OK not long after I moved to “Mayberry.” They are perfect for fall. And I was able to pick up two additional place settings at I’m currently at the mall, camped out in a chair while the girls shop. Don’t tell anyone, but I bought some lovely black toile dinner plates on sale. Won’t they look smashing with red linens at Christmas?
